Columbian graduate switching gears (From the Advertiser-Tribune Tiffin, OH November 19, 2008)
PERRYSBURG TOWNSHIP, Hancock County - A 1991 graduate of Columbian High School is making the switch from one community college to another. Cory Stine, who most recently had the title of assistant director of enrollment services at Terra Community College, is to become the dean of advising, orientation and career services at Owens Community College next month. Stine said he has had a great opportunity at Terra and is looking forward to going to Owens. "It's an opportunity to assist even more students in continuing their education," he said. "It's very exciting. It's an exciting opportunity to assist more students in continuing their education." According to a release from Owens, Stine will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of strategic and administrative leadership. It states he has a bachelor's degree in psychology and a master's degree in family science, both from Ohio State University, and is working toward his doctorate in higher education administration at the University of Toledo. Stine, who has worked for Terra for eight years, said he started as the recruitment coordinator through the admissions department and later served as assistant dean of student support services. Then, he served as coordinator of enrollment services and later became the assistant director of enrollment services. Mary McCue, director of marketing, enrollment services and public relations at Terra, said Stine has been an asset in helping students understand all kinds of services and programs available to help them succeed in the classroom, and he has been active in the community. "He has helped transform the orientation program to a more student-centered learning initiative," she said. Stine, a Port Clinton resident, said he will work at the Owens' Perrysburg Township campus, and his first day will be Dec. 1. "I think the first goal that I have for Owens is to continue the focus on providing services to the students so that every student feels that Owens cares about their success," he said. "A second one, I'd like to expand the collaboration among the different departments at Owens so that we can serve students even better." Stine said he is thankful for the chance he has had to work at Terra. "It has been a wonderful experience, and I will miss the students and the people here at Terra," he said. Stine said he encouraged people to go to school during his time at Terra. Many people, especially adults, are reluctant to go to college, he said. "I would simply encourage anyone who's thinking about continuing their education to take action and do that. If anyone's considering continuing their education at college, do it," he said. "Many adults have not been to college, and they're simply reluctant to go to college." McCue said Stine has been an enthusiastic part of the Terra family and has helped a lot of students. "His genuine concern for students and him being an advocate for students has always been his strong suit," she said. McCue said the school has a large seat to fill with Stine leaving Terra. "He's truly been an asset to the college, and we all knew that he had aspirations for (a) larger college or university setting," she said. "Cory's going to be a big loss to our college. ... We're very sorry to see him go but very happy his dream of going to a larger school is being fulfilled." On the Web: Owens Community College: Terra Community College: |
